Canadian Special

The smallest gesture can soothe spirits. In Jaipur we were on a “Steve” walking tour of the city encountering the usual merchants who wanted to sell of their wares. In front of one of the city gates, we came upon two men and a woman stringing rose and marigold garlands. Locals buy these garlands to offer to the deities of shrines scattered throughout the city. It was late morning and these three were nearly through stringing for the day. One of the men turned toward Jean and me, picked up two rose buds, and, smiling, handed one to each of us. He expected nothing: Roses never smelled so sweet!

With lightened hearts, we continued our walk through the bazaar and came upon some table runners we were sure would be great for our tables. The bargaining and smart talk began. When Ross and Steve finally determined where we were, we had already sealed the deal with Pepsis. As we drank our sodas, Dev, the merchant, began to tell us all of the special crafts in India: cloth, silver, inlay, and the list went on. He turned to Jean and asked her what was special about Canada. Jean looked at me, flummoxed--unusual for her. I was no help since I was a poseur--a USAer posing as a Canadian. But Ross, always in the game and never at a loss for anything replied, “Special about Canada? Ground beef, 99 cents a pound!”

P.S. Please, S & M, would you identify yourselves more specifically. Thank you.

RuthAnn and Steve,
I've been following your blog, it sounds amazing. Can't wait to hear all of the details next month! Nothing new on Oakdale Ave.!

Ross,

"... .99/lb. ..."?! LOL. You sir have missed your calling as a comedy writer. Given the Hindu reverence for beef did that observation go over like a jukebox in a leprosy ward playing "What's 'Eatin You."? ;-)

WOW! WOW! and I say again WOW! I have been away from the blog for awhile as we were in Cuba (LOVED IT!) and then catching up from Cuba. You certainly know how to have a time of it! I cannot imagine the highs and lows you have been through. You realize you are all bonded for life! The hose incident was too scary and I am glad the all is well now, Harlene and Brian-I wish you speedy recovery and peace. The Taj sounded wonderful, the sari sellers too much fun, I think you made the bag lady jealous to be knee deep in material!, I would love to go to the Gandhi museums someday-that would be fascinating, the roses and marigolds must be beautiful, I'm so glad you stopped to smell the roses. I'm sure there is elation and a tiny bit of motorcycle withdrawal as it seems like your plans have changed but from this end of the planet I think you have made the right choice, we can all breathe easier. Enjoy the sun and RELAX-JUST DO IT!
Did Mr. Happy get returned? Daniel was very sad to hear about that, "NOT Mr. Happy! He's so cute! They're a bunch of meanyheads!" We are looking forward to your next entry about the serious relaxation techniques you are developing!
LOVE your Love of Life,
little sis and fellow CanAm,
Nancy

For you Dems, Eric Holder is our new Att. General, served under Janet Reno and Tom Daschel, head of HHS now. Good picks. Should get through confirmation. HIllary offered State and she's considering it. Bill's contracts may impede it. Waiting...Change is coming, but Auto execs want bailout too. Gee whiz, me too. Happy for your softer ending in India..enjoy the good life and remember what us poor folk are left with here in the snow. You DO want to come back right? Stay safe and no more nightmares OK?

Dear RA,
Lydia is here and can't wait to see you. We would like you and Steve to go with us to Stevens Point for lunch chez Karl and Judy as soon as you can after you get back. Lydia returns to France on Dec. 14th and you return to GB on Dec. 1st. Is that correct?
Love,
Paula
